Original State

The 1st Floor when we bought the house consisted of four bedrooms (two with attached bathrooms), a storage room and toilet room. The four bedrooms opened off a foyer area, which was separated from the stairwell by a pair of inward-opening doors. Three of the bedrooms had marble fireplaces, while in the fourth bedroom much of the fireplace had been removed and secreted behind a wall containing a small closet. The rooms on the 1st Floor were all immediately useable, even though they were not particularly attractive.

1st FLOOR - OLD

Bedroom 1 is at the back of the house facing the canal. It is large, has wooden floors, two large windows and a fireplace, and adjoins a bathroom area with bath, basin and bidet. While the bathroom is functional, it is not particularly attractive.

Bedroom 2 is at the front of the house facing Rue Gambetta. It is large with an angled front wall, has wooden floors, two large windows and a fireplace, and adjoins a bathroom area with shower, cupboard, basin and bidet. While the bathroom is functional, it is even less attractive than the one attached to Bedroom 1.

Bedroom 3 is at the back of the house facing the canal. It is a good size, has wooden floors, one large window and a fireplace, but does not have an adjoining bathroom.

Bedroom 4 is at the front of the house facing Rue Gambetta. It is a good size with an angled front wall, has wooden floors, one large windows but does not have an adjoining bathroom. It is the only one of the bedrooms on the 1st Floor without a marble fireplace.

In between bedrooms 3 and 4 is a storage room with large cupboards along each side. It seems to have been used as a general storage area and as a wardrobe area for the bedrooms, since the cupboards were full of old clothes when the house was purchased.

On this floor, there was also a toilet room which must have served all the bedrooms, since the bathrooms adjoining bedrooms 1 and 2 only contained bidets, and no toilets. The toilet window opens onto the lightwell on the eastern side of the house.

All the bedrooms and the toilet open off a central foyer, which is connected to the stairwell via double inward-opening doors.
